Finding Your Forte: Creating your own LMS in WordPress  / WordCamp NYC 2019

In the presentation, I walked through how the Forte Courses platform came together in WordPress and why its structure needed to break away from the typical linear LMS model for learning. Forte Corurses worked differently than Canvas or Blackboard or other websites like Udemy or LinkedinLearning. Instead of forcing learners to move step by step through a rigid sequence, the platform was built to function more like a flexible and modular ecosystem. That is where the pedagogical approach I call Helicopter Learning comes in. The idea is simple. Give people a way to see the entire landscape of a course, understand where their own gaps are, and then drop directly into the modules that matter most to them.

To support that, the course architecture was rebuilt around clear entry points such as Learn the Basics, Grow, and Become a Pro so learners can self select their path instead of being funneled through a one size fits all progression. The whole goal was to elevate learner autonomy while still keeping the educational flow intuitive and structured.

On the technical side, I explained how this approach was implemented in WordPress using the Sensei LMS framework in combination with the Pro builder by Theme.co. The case study also illustrated how an asset driven business model works alongside the educational content. Digital assets, course resources, and even physical materials through Amazon KDP were integrated into the platform. This created a system that supports learning as well as long term sustainability.

This model proved itself in practice, most clearly through securing legacy partnerships such as Kodak. It showed how creators can move beyond client based services and into building scalable and product focused educational ecosystems.
